Our Story
The Vineyard Vixens Wine Club was started in 2004 by a small group of friends in the Kanata suburb of Ottawa, ON. The group has met on a monthly basis over the years and welcomed new friends and seen close pals move away. The Vixens have developed a standard format for tasting and exploring a selection of wines based on varietal or region.
The use of ISO (International Standard Organization) wine glasses allows each member to experience similar aromas, flavours and nuances of the wines being tasted. The event begins with a short overview of the featured region or varietal providing historical and cultural background followed by the presentation of the wines for the event. Each tasting is accompanied by standardized tasting notes providing details on the wines, wine labels, benchmark aromas and flavour profiles.
On average, 6 wines are selected for each tasting event. Each member brings to the tasting event their own wine glass kit and a food pairing to share. The evening is divided into 2 phases; tasting the featured wines without food followed by a second round of tasting of the wines with preferred food matches. Members taste the wines in sequence, assessing each for its specific qualities followed by a group discussion and rating of the wine compared with the other wines included in the tasting. Once the favorites have been identified, the food is presented and members discuss their optimal food pairings.
The Club had to adjust when the pandemic hit but has not missed a beat! We quickly moved online to monthly virtual tastings that have continued to be popular with our members. September 2022 will be the 18th season of Vineyard Vixens and will see a hybrid of in-person events and virtual tastings.
